The company is fighting multiple lawsuits from artistic authors and the New York Times over the claims. Previous product releases have led to criticism that OpenAI has ignored copyright laws by scraping vast amounts of data to train its AI models. OpenAI is not the only company launching AI models that create videos but the product is notable because the company has already had success with ChatGPT and DALL-E, an image generating tool. It added it “could not predict… all the ways people will abuse it”. The company said it planned to hire outside security experts to test its technology for weaknesses. Sora has only been released to a select group of technical testers, artists and filmmakers for now to help OpenAI spot issues and opportunities with the technology. OpenAI said its tool would reject requests to create videos with “extreme violence, sexual content, hateful imagery, celebrity likeness or the IP of others”. However, the video generation tool will provoke fears from artists, animators and filmmakers that their jobs could be at risk, and fuel fears of extremely convincing “deepfake” videos flooding the internet. The unveiling of Sora comes amid a surge of interest in AI tools after the release of ChatGPT a little over a year ago. One example prompt that created a realistic video asked: “Extreme close up of a 24-year-old woman’s eye blinking, standing in Marrakech during magic hour, cinematic film shot in 70mm.” Sora is able to understand requests for camera angles or video styles, creating uncannily realistic footage or cartoonish videos akin to a Pixar film. OpenAI said the bugs could lead to “humourous generations”. In another, a basketball explodes as it is thrown through a hoop. In another clip showing a grandmother at her birthday, characters’ hands contort bizarrely and the flames on the birthday cake do not move as she tries to blow them out. In a blog post, OpenAI admitted its model sometimes struggled with physics or situations with multiple characters, while “animals or people can spontaneously appear”. A rolling pin on a shelf, meanwhile, appears to be balanced at an impossible angle, while there is what looks like a wooden wine bottle in the background. The spoon used by the grandmother in the clip seemingly appears from nowhere. However, while the clip may look hyperrealistic at first glance, there are errors.
